Innovative endodontic care
When other options are exhausted
When root canal treatment and even options like apicoectomy are not viable, intentional reimplantation may provide a final opportunity to preserve a natural tooth. The highly specialized procedure can be a powerful solution for complex cases, one that combines precision, experience, and perfect timing.
If you require intentional reimplantation, you’re in excellent hands at Texas Panhandle Endodontics. Dr. Carrillo and his patient-centered team are committed to using the latest technology and modern endodontic techniques and providing gentle, conservative care to ensure the best possible patient experience and outcomes. We strive not only to meet but exceed your expectations.

What Is Intentional Reimplantation?
Intentional reimplantation is exactly what it sounds like: the planned removal and reinsertion of a tooth. But this is far from a routine extraction. The purpose is not to permanently remove the tooth but to temporarily remove it to allow for an apicoectomy, also known as a root-end treatment when the procedure cannot be performed while the tooth remains in place.
After removing the affected tooth, Dr. Carrillo has approximately 15 minutes to complete the following:
- Examine and clean the root tip
- Perform an apicoectomy, which involves removing the root end and any diseased tissues
- Seal the root tip with a biocompatible filling to prevent reinfection
- Reinsert the tooth carefully and stabilize it for healing
The endodontic procedure demands expert specialist handling and precision timing to ensure the vitality of the surrounding bone and soft tissues.
When Is Intentional Reimplantation Recommended?
Intentional reimplantation is never the first recommendation. It is required for very specific scenarios, including:
- A failing root canal that cannot be retreated effectively
- A tooth not accessible for a standard apicoectomy due to anatomical constraints
- A complex case where all other conservative options have been exhausted
Dr. Carrillo will evaluate your unique needs using detailed CBCT imaging, thorough exams, and collaboration with your general dentist. If he determines that intentional reimplantation offers a meaningful chance of saving a compromised tooth, he may recommend the endodontic procedure as an alternative to extraction and tooth replacement.
What Happens After Your Intentional Reimplantation Process?
At Texas Panhandle Endodontics, we include a structured series of follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure the procedure’s success:
- 1 week – evaluation of healing and stabilization
- 1 month – assessment of root and bone integration
- 6 months – radiographic review of progress
- 1 year – final check to confirm the treatment’s success
All follow-up visits are included as part of your treatment plan, ensuring you receive continuous, attentive care from start to finish.
