You can usually eat normal meals before your visit unless your doctor gives you specific instructions. After the procedure, it is recommended to avoid chewing on the treated side until the numbness wears off and any temporary filling has hardened.

Once the endodontist finishes, you must return to your general dentist within a few weeks to have a permanent crown or filling placed. This step is critical to protect the tooth from further infection and restore its full function.

Recovery is generally quick and manageable. Mild soreness or sensitivity to chewing is common for a few days and can usually be controlled with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication. Most patients feel back to normal within 3–5 days, while complete healing of the tooth and surrounding tissues may take a few weeks. Retreatment may cause slightly more discomfort than an initial root canal, but swelling and tenderness are usually mild and resolve within a week. To support healing, avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the final restoration is placed and follow your dentist’s instructions.
